PMA Program Goals

The program strives to produce practitioners with outstanding clinical abilities able to deliver a high level of compassionate patient care that is thoughtful, respectful, professional and intelligent in its application.

PMA is committed to:

  1. Provide a program that produces graduates able to deliver high quality, compassionate, and patient focused-care in the pre-hospital setting.
  2. Provide the training and education necessary for graduates to demonstrate competency and proficiency within their scope of practice, in collaboration with allied health care professionals
  3. Provide a program study that meets and exceeds the standards set at the Provincial level, as set out by the Alberta College of Paramedics and published as the Alberta Occupational Competency Profiles for EMR, EMT and EMT-P graduates.
  4. Provide a program of study that meets and exceeds the standards set at the national level, as adopted by the Canadian Medical Association of Canada, and published as the National Occupational Competency Profile for the Emergency Medial Technician program (nationally PCP) and the Emergency Medical Technologist-Paramedic program (nationally ACP).
  5. Develop students that understand their role in the health care system and the necessity to pursue and a commitment to life long learning and constant reflection for self improvement.
  6. Instill in graduates a passion to advance the profession of paramedicine and work effectively with all members of the health care system.
  7. Appreciate the importance of evidence based medicine and its impact on the future development and advancement of the profession as a specialization.

PMA Program Outcomes

Graduates of the programs from Professional Medical Associates will demonstrate the aptitude, attitudes and behaviours to be competency entry level practitioners in the following domains:.

Cognitive (Knowledge)

  • Demonstrate the ability to comprehend, apply, and evaluate information in the classroom, practical lab, and clinical/field component in the respective program.
  • Determine patient needs and choose necessary interventions appropriate to the student’s scope of practice.

Psychomotor (Proficiency)

  • Demonstrate satisfactory technical performance in all skills as required for the entry-level practitioner during practical labs, exams and clinical/field rotations.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory communication skills when communicating with faculty, patients, preceptors, and EMS/medical facility personnel.
  • Demonstrate satisfactory documentation skills when documenting patient histories, assessments, patient care, and interventions.
  • Demonstrate application of general education knowledge when communicating, documenting and performing patient care.

Affective

  • Demonstrate personal behavior consistent with professional, faculty, and employer expectations of an entry-level practitioner.
  • Demonstrate expected personal behaviors during patient/staff interactions in the clinical/field rotations as evidenced by the progressive/final field summary evaluations.
  • Demonstrate values consistent with the values of Professional Medical Associates, the Alberta College of Paramedics.
  • Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the Code of Ethics of the Alberta College of Paramedics.
  • Recognize and accept cultural differences while providing patient care.
  • Differentiate cultural variations to appropriately modify behavior/attitude while providing patient care.
