Emergency Medical Responder Program
Program Overview
EMR Program
The Emergency Medical Responder program was originally designed as the entry level ambulance program for the ambulance profession. Recent changes to the program requirements from the Alberta College of Paramedics has led to many potential students interested in pursuing an EMS career to complete the FMR program instead as registration as an EMR is not a requirement to enter into the Primary Care Paramedic Program.
The EMR program now has a number of specific pre-requisites such as non-GDL Class 5 driver’s license, and academic requirements including English 30-1 or 30-2, Math 10 Pure or 20-1 or Math 20 Applied or 20-2, and biology 30 and a CLEAR criminal record check with vulnerable sectors.
The EMR Program from Professional Medical Associates also includes a driving program using the high-fidelity driving simulator and a number of certification courses. There has been a decrease in demand since most students are looking to pursue the Primary Care Paramedic level and only need to complete the FMR program.
Graduates of the Professional Medical Associates’ programs are eligible to complete the Provincial Registration Examination and become registered as Emergency Medical Responders with the Alberta College of Paramedics and eligible to work in the province of Alberta.
